“Dela” By Johnny Clegg: A Joyful, Wedding First Dance Song

Joy

As a Kansas City wedding DJ, I enjoy watching Brides & Grooms perform the first dance of their wedding reception in a number of ways. Some choose slow, romantic classics or ballads to express their love. Other newlyweds wish to share their happiness by entertaining their wedding reception guests with a uniquely choreographed and well rehearsed, fun first dance routine.

Love and happiness are familiar,  emotional staples of every wedding day. Without those essential elements, there would be no cause to celebrate at wedding receptions in Kansas City, or anywhere else for that matter.

But, what about those soon-to-be married Brides and Grooms that want to express the joy they feel for finding and marrying the love of their lives? Joy is a feeling of elation, another emotion that is at the very heart of so many relationships, but is rarely shared in the form of a wedding first dance song. One reason might be the lack of songs that truly reflect that type of joy.

The Plain White T’s come close to expressing newlywed joy with “1, 2, 3, 4.” Even Jason Mraz skirts the outer boundaries of joy with “I’m Yours.” Both songs can be heard as first dance song selections at any number of wedding receptions.

But, at least in my opinion, neither of those wedding first dance songs takes the expression of joy to the pinnacle of wedded bliss, unbridled glee and happiness that truly conveys the elation so many couples feel.

Recently, I was reminded of a song that may be the answer for couples who want to express a high level of joy during their wedding reception first dance.

Dela” By Johnny Clegg,
A Kansas City Wedding Reception First Dance Song
Filled With The Joy Of Love!

Johnny CleggDela,” recorded by Johnny Clegg was released in 1990. It was also featured, ironically, during a wedding scene in the 1997, Brandon Fraser movie, “George Of The Jungle.” It’s a song with an infectious, uptempo, rhythmic beat that brings about an irresistible desire to smile and dance! “Dela” is also a song about the joy of falling and being in love.

Clegg is a native South African whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In the course of three decades, Johnny Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of music worldwide.

Take a look at the lyrics for “Dela” while listening to Johnny Clegg’s song in the video below. If you find yourself smiling, unable to resist the urge to get up and dance, then wanting to listen to it again, “Dela”  might just be the expression of joy you’ve been wanting for your wedding first dance.

Joyful, Wedding Reception First Dance Song Lyrics:
Dela” by Johnny Clegg

One day I looked up and there you were,
like a simple question looking for an answer.
Now I am the whale listening to some inner call,
swimming blindly to throw myself upon your shore.

What if I don’t find you when I have landed?
Will you leave me here to die on your shore stranded?

I think I know why the dog howls at the moon.
I think I know why the dog howls at the moon.

I sing dela, dela ngyanya dela when I’m with you,
dela, sondela mama sondela, I burn for you.

I’ve been waiting for you all my life hoping for a miracle,
I’ve been waiting day and night, day and night.
I’ve been waiting for you all my life waiting for redemption,
I’ve been waiting day and night, I burn for you.

A blind bird sings inside the cage that is my heart,
the image of your face comes to me when I am alone in the dark.
If I could give a shape to this ache that I have for you,
If I could find the voice that says the words to capture you.

I think I know, I think I know, I think I know,
I think I know why the dog howls at the moon.

Sondela, sondela, mama sondela, I burn for you.

I’ve been waiting for you all my life hoping for a miracle,
I’ve been waiting day and night, day and night.
I’ve been waiting for you all my life waiting for redemption,
I’ve been waiting day and night, I burn for you.

Burn for you, I burn for you…
