We’ve come to part three of the five-part article, “5 Essential Elements for Designing Your Extraordinary Kansas City Wedding Reception.” In part one you learned the secret of “M-A-G-I-C” and the importance of engaging your wedding guests early in your wedding reception with fun and entertaining moments that create lasting memories. In part two, you discovered the value of planning and attention to detail to produce a celebration that will make your guests eager to stay with you late into the night.
In the sales business it is said that it is easier to keep a client than it is to lose them and try to get them back. The same can be said of wedding reception guests. It’s much easier to keep their attention than it is to lose it and try to regain it. In part three of “5 Essential Elements for Designing Your Extraordinary Kansas City Wedding Reception” we’ll look at three activities out of hundreds that are not only entertaining, they’ll keep your guests wondering what other fun surprises you might have in store for them and ready to pay attention to the most important moments and formalities of your celebration from the wedding toasts to the wedding first dance and more. Plus, they’ll be even more excited to stay and dance the night away with you and your new husband or wife.

Getting Your Guests Involved
The most obvious reason a bride & groom invite family and friends as guests to their wedding reception is so they can share in the celebration of their happiness. The other reason, and one that gets little attention, is that it is a way for newlyweds to say “Thank you!” to the people who have had some influence on their lives. Show your appreciation by making these special individuals feel welcome and glad that they have set aside that time to spend with you.
“Pretend that your Kansas City wedding reception
venue is your living room to help you find
the personal touches that will
entice, engage, and entertain your guests.”
How would you plan an evening at home with your friends and family? What activities would you have planned to keep everyone entertained? If you want your friends to tell others about how much fun they had with you at your home, what elements of fun would you be sure to provide?
If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas, Peter Merry’s highly acclaimed book, “The Best Wedding Reception…Ever!” (Available at local bookstores and as an e-book on Amazon.com’s Kindle along with iBooks for iPad users.), you’ll find over 250 fun and inclusive wedding reception activities.
Here are three fun activities that can be easily included into your wedding reception.
- Play “The Newlywed or Shoe Game” and invite your guests to submit the questions.
- When the buffet opens, play a game of “Bride & Groom Trivia.” The guest that answers the question correctly is invited to be the next in line at the buffet and they get to take everyone seated at their table with them.
- How about a “Kiss For A Kiss?” Instead of automatically kissing every time the guests “tink” their glasses, pre-select a dozen or so, fun-loving couples from your RSVPs. Give that list to your Best Man, your Maid of Honor, or your wedding DJ. Each time the glasses “tink,” they can randomly select and announce a couple from your list to come forward and demonstrate exactly how they want you to kiss. Of course, your task is to replicate that kiss. The photos are so much fun!
Activities are not only entertaining, they are golden opportunities to get and keep your guests involved in the fun. Trust me…your guests want to “play” with you. All you have to do is ask. But remember, even though there are no rules when it comes to wedding receptions, only select activities that are a reflection of who you are and/or will help you achieve the results you desire.
By inviting your guests to be more than observers and getting them actively involved in the fun of your celebration, they’ll be less inclined to be “clock watchers,” looking for a polite excuse to leave early.
