Friday Wedding Music Rewind | “Your Song” By Elton John

Your Song By Elton John A Kansas City Wedding Reception First Dance Favorite

Your Song” Performed by Elton John:
A Wedding First Dance Song That Touches
The Heart & Soul Of Kansas City Newlyweds.

In this week’s Friday Wedding Music Rewind we’re going back to November, 1970, and to the release of the love-ballad,Your Song,” written by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. Elton John’s recording of “Your Song” propelled him into notoriety as a respected recording artist. The song is not only listed as #137 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time. According to DJ Intelligence, a website that tracks music requests played by wedding DJs around the world, Your Song” is still a popular wedding first dance song that holds the #40 position on the list of the Top 50 Most Requested Bride & Groom Wedding First Dance Songs for 2012. No wonder it’s still occasionally heard at wedding receptions in Kansas City, as well.

Taupin, a long time collaborator of John’s, wrote the lyrics for “Your Song” in about 10 minutes over breakfast at the home of Elton’s mom in London where the two of them were living at the time. According to a number of on-line sources, John has said that it only took him 30 minutes to compose the music.

Your Song” became the breakthrough single that introduced Elton John to America and was his first single to find its way onto the Billboard Top 100 Chart in the U.S., climbing to #8  for the week ending January 23, 1971. It held that peak position for 3 of the 14 weeks it was a chart topper.  It is said that Your Song” is one of Elton John’s favorites and he still includes it in every concert performance. The song was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

It is, perhaps, the expression of young love that is behind the continued popularity of “Your Song as a wedding first dance at wedding receptions in Kansas City and elsewhere. And, it could well be the easily relatable and relatively simple lyrics, including the beautiful refrains of “I hope you don’t mind that I put down in wordsHow wonderful life is while you’re in the world” and “My gift is my song and this one’s for you” that touches the heart and soul of so many newlyweds.

Watch a very young Elton John perform “Your Song on an unknown 1970 television broadcast in the video below. Scroll down a bit further to read the lyricsYou and your fiancé might just find it to be the perfect choice for your first dance as husband and wife at your Kansas City wedding reception.

A Top 40 First Dance Song For
Kansas City Wedding Receptions,
Your Song” Performed By Elton John (Lyrics)

It’s a little bit funny, this feeling inside
I’m not one of those who can easily hide
I don’t have much money, but boy if I did
I’d buy a big house where we both could live

If I was a sculptor, but then again, no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
I know it’s not much, but it’s the best I can do
My gift is my song, and this one’s for you

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well, a few of the verses, well, they’ve got me quite cross
But the sun’s been quite kind while I wrote this song
It’s for people like you that keep it turned on

So excuse me forgetting, but these things I do
You see I’ve forgotten if they’re green or they’re blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I’ve ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple, but now that it’s done
I hope you don’t mind, I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you’re in the world
