Top 21 Wedding Reception First Dance Song, Al Green's "Let's Stay Together."

“Let’s Stay Together,” Performed By Al Green,
A Beautifully Soulful, Wedding First Dance Song
Still Touching Newlyweds’ Hearts & Souls At
Kansas City Wedding Receptions.

The Friday Wedding Music Rewind is back and this week’s featured song is, both, a personal and a wedding first dance favorite, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green. “Let’s Stay Together” is #21 on the list of the 2012Top 50 Most Requested Bride & Groom Wedding First Dance Songs for wedding receptions in Kansas City and across the country. Even though we’re close to the end of the year, the song’s wedding popularity will most likely keep it in the Top 25 for 2013, as well.

The romantic, soulful and gospel-inspired Let’s Stay Together” was released in 1971 on an album by the same name and was Green’s biggest hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for week ending February 12, 1972. It remained on the Hot 100 chart for 16 weeks. It also climbed to the #1 position on the rhythm & blues charts and went on to be the top song on the Billboard year end chart for 1972.

And, besides being selected as the 60th greatest song of all time on Rolling Stone Magazine’s prestigious list of the 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time, the Library of Congress added “Let’s Stay Together” to the National Recording Registry in 2010 which recognizes recordings that are “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

What continues to make Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” a popular, Kansas City wedding first dance selection, however, has nothing to do with the song’s many accolades. More likely, it is it’s refrain that speaks to a lifetime commitment “whether times are good or bad, happy or sad,” and to it’s moderately upbeat and very danceable R&B beat.

Listen to “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green in the video below. You may find it to be just the song you were looking for that best describes the relationship you share with your bride or groom-to-be and the best wedding first dance choice for you. Scroll down below the video to read the lyrics.

Let’s Stay Together,” Performed By Al Green (Lyrics):

Written by Al Green, Al Jackson, Jr. & Willie Mitchell

I, I’m so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
‘Cause you make me feel so brand new
And I want to spend my life with you

Things just ain’t the same, baby, since we’ve been together
Loving you forever
Is what I need
Let me be the one you come running to
I’ll never be untrue

Let’s, let’s stay together
Lovin’ you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad

Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad
Why somebody, why some people break up
Then turn around and make up
I just can’t see
You’d never do that to me (would you, baby)
Staying around you is all I see
(Here’s what I want us to do)

Let’s, we oughta stay together
Loving you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad

Let’s, let’s stay together
Lovin’ you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad (Fades)
