Friday Wedding Music Rewind | Bon Jovi “Livin’ On A Prayer”

Kansas City Wedding Reception DJ Music Livin' On A Prayer By Bon Jovi

Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi is this week’s featured song in the “Friday Wedding Music Rewind.” The song not only remains #8 on the Top 200 Most Requested Party Songs at Kansas City wedding receptions and elsewhere according to DJ Intelligence, a website that tracks music requests played by wedding DJs around the world, this week “Livin’ On A Prayer” also made music history by re-entering the Billboard Hot 100 Chart on November 30, 2013, at #25 more than 26 years after it topped that very same Billboard Chart back on February 14, 1987.

The new-found popularity of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On A Prayer” is being attributed in large part to a video featuring a Boston Celtics fan, Jeremy Fry, who can be seen dancing to the song during a stoppage in play at the Celtic’s home arena.  The original , YouTube video was posted in 2009 and has registered more than 3.5 million views. But, a new upload of his dance routine was reposted on Utrend.tv on Oct. 17, 2013 and, according to Billboard.com, “has drawn 11 million worldwide views alone and has been  shared on Facebook more than 1.6 million times since its posting.”

Check out the video that has not only gone viral, but given renewed chart life  to “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi.

Regardless of its new found chart success, Livin’ On A Prayer” has always been something of a staple at wedding receptions in Kansas City. As a wedding DJ, it’s that “go to song” that gets played when guests on the dance floor begin to wear down from extended periods of shaking their booty. Why? Because nobody dances to “Livin’ On A Prayer,” but guests, young and old, will gather in the center of a dance floor to sing along to the lyrics with a passion that even Bon Jovi can’t match. And, they’ll wait for the song’s refrain. “Ohh, We’re half way there, Woah, Livin’ on a prayer…” just for the opportunity to join in the chorus at the top of their lungs.

Only a handful of songs like Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” to name a few, share the same “absolutely everybody knows the lyrics and can’t help singing along” power as “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi.

Listen to “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi while enjoying their 1986 music video. Be careful where you watch and listen, though. You won’t be able to keep yourself from singing along or from rushing to add the song to your wedding DJ’s “must play” list for your wedding reception.

The #8 Most Requested
Kansas City Wedding Reception Party Song,
Livin’ On A Prayer” By Bon Jovi (Lyrics):

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union’s been on strike
He’s down on his luck…it’s tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
For love – for love

She says: We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
It doesn’t make a difference
If we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot
For love – we’ll give it a shot

Ohh We’re half way there
Woah Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear
Woah Livin’ on a prayer

Tommy’s got his six string in hock
Now he’s holding in what he used
To make it talk – so tough, it’s tough
Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers: Baby it’s okay, someday

We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got
‘Cause it doesn’t make a difference
If we make it or not
We’ve got each other and that’s a lot
For love – we’ll give it a shot

Ohh We’re half way there
Woah Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear
Woah Livin’ on a prayer
Livin’ on a prayer

We’ve got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when thats all that you’ve got
Ohh We’re half way there
Woah Livin’ on a prayer
Take my hand and we’ll make it – I swear

Woah Livin’ on a prayer
(Repeat to fade)
