(Photo: Liz Burd via Good Morning America) We all have stories to tell about spending Christmas with family. But imagine for a moment that your father-in-law was Santa Claus. Well, maybe not the real Santa Claus but a mall Santa who you had your photo taken with 13 years earlier as a child before growing up to marry his daughter. For Minnesota resident, Chris Burd, that’s exactly what happened.
In 1998, a then 13-year old Chris went to the mall with his three-year old sister to pose for a photo with Santa. Actually, the man filling in for Santa was Elmer Abbas and the dad of Liz Abbas, Chris’ future fiancé. It was a forgotten moment until Charlene Burd, Chris’ mother, was going through some family Christmas photos before the holidays in 2011 and stumbled across the photo of her very recently engaged son, Chris, and his sister sitting with a Santa who looked just like Liz’s dad, Elmer.
It wasn’t out of the question that Elmer could have been that mall Santa. After all, he’s been helping out the real St. Nick for 20 years.
“I just told her she’s nuts. So later in the week I went over to the house and saw [the photo] and decided it wasn’t him,” Chris told ABCNews.com. “But later on, I took a closer look and was like, ‘Oh my God. That’s Liz’s dad.”
Liz & Chris were married in September, 2012, and displayed the photo, along with Liz’s 1998 Santa photo with Elmer, at their wedding. For Chris, it was “creepy” to realize he met his father-in-law 13 years earlier, but he and Elmer have enjoyed joking about the twist of fate that brought two families together.
