The “How To’s” To Doing PSY’s “Gangnam Style” Dance Moves

Kansas City DJ, Ron Ruth Wedding Entertainment, Provides "Gangnam Style" by Psy, Dance Steps

Love it or hate it, it’s pretty clear to me as a DJ that the popularity of the YouTube phenomena, “Gangnam Style” by PSY is not going away anytime soon. As a matter of fact, the song has quickly turned into one of the top three, most requested songs; at least by guests at Kansas City wedding receptions where I’m the DJ. With over 459 million views on YouTube to date (as of this writing), it’s no wonder.

But it’s also obvious, especially as I was watching the dance floor at a wedding reception this weekend, that even the most avid partiers are still struggling with the PSY-like dance steps. Actually, some of the more original choreography I witnessed from behind the DJ console from those who had been indulging in large quantities of adult beverages, was worthy of it’s own YouTube video stardom. Alcohol induced dancing always makes me chuckle. But, I digress.

For those individuals, however, who strive to impress the rest of the guest list with their flawless execution of PSY’s dance moves to “Gangnam Style,” I’ve located a few videos to make it easier to learn and to have you ready to go for this coming weekend’s round of wedding receptions. Watch these videos and you may get so good at doing it “Gangnam Style,” you’ll seek out and crash wedding receptions just so you can show off your moves.

A great place to start is by learning the steps and hand moves from PSY, himself.

Now that you’ve got the basics, check out this video from JuNCurry Ahn as he dances all the steps.  The straight-on camera angle makes it easy to learn the moves to “Gangnam Style” and will have you tearing up the dance floor as if PSY had made a special appearance at the party.

Still struggling? Not to worry! Here’s a slow motion video to help you nail some of the faster steps.

Now that you’ve got the dance moves to “Gangnam Style” down, perhaps you’d like to sing along. But, unless Korean is your second language, you might not know what the lyrics mean. I’ve got you covered and came across a translation from redditor gyrfalcons.

“Gangnam Style” Lyrics (Translated):

“Oppa’s Gangnam style
Gangnam style
A girl who is warm and human by day
A classy girl who knows how to relax with a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart heats up by night
A girl with that kind of twist
I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you by day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts by night
That kind of guy
Beautiful, lovely
Yeah you, hey, yeah exactly you, hey
Beautiful, lovely
Yeah you, hey, yeah exactly you, hey
Shall we take it to the limit?
Oppa’s Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa’s Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady, Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady oh oh oh oh
A girl who looks quiet but who gets down when she gets down
A girl who lets her hair loose when she feels it’s the right time
A girl who keeps covered but is sexier than girls who expose it all
A sensual girl like that
I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but who gets down when he gets down
A guy who goes completely crazy when it’s the right time
A guy whose ideas bulge bigger than his muscles
That kind of guy
Beautiful, lovely
Yeah you, hey, yeah exactly you, hey
Beautiful, lovely
Yeah you, hey, yeah exactly you, hey
Shall we take it to the limit?
Oppa’s Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa’s Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady, Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady oh oh oh oh
Above the man that runs, is the man that flies , baby baby
I’m a guy who knows a thing or two
Above the man that runs, is the man that flies, baby baby
I’m a guy who knows a thing or two
You know what I’m sayin’
Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady, Oppa’s Gangnam style
Heyyy sexy lady oh oh oh oh”
